of March 2009 Rohde Nielsen A/S won the contract for the Beach Nourishment on the Danish West Coast.
In 1875 the Danish State started with coast protection to prevent
erosion and flooding of the Danish West Coast. This is now administered
under the Danish Coastal Authority, which every year initiates beach
nourishment campaigns to secure the coastline of Jutland against the
coming winter storms anticipated to hit during the winter season. In
1974 a trailer suction hopper dredger was introduced for this type of
work at the west coast, and has since then been the preferred choice of
equipment. (Source KDI webpage)
Rohde Nielsen A/S has won the contract after having passed a
pre-qualification procedure conforming EU-rules leaving only 6
companies to tender.
This years campaign comprises of four locations of
a total of 1,7 million m³ to be pumped ashore. The trailer suction
hopper dredger transports sand from a winning area in the North Sea to
a designated area, where it is pumped ashore. On shore the sand is
distributed by an experienced staff with many years of experience using
various equipment such as front loaders, excavators and bulldozers.
The work requires high demands to the contractor as to monitoring
and supervision. There is of course the demand for a successful
project, but a successful project implies a number of factors such as
time, quality and safety, which all have to be ensured in the best way
possible.
A main factor is the execution period, which lies from April to
September. This time of the year is the high season for tourists. The
Danish west coast is a very popular and well-visited place in the
summer time and the area of pumping ashore will be on public beaches
that in the high season usually are very crowded. This creates a high
focus from the public, and makes safety one of the main factors to be
considered.
The work has recently started with the Gefion R at Harboøre Tange, and is scheduled to be finished by September.
