Sylt Beach Nourishment 2009
Rohde Nielsen A/S has won the Sylt beach nourishment contract for the next 4 years.

The Island of Sylt is situated in the north of Germany at the border to Denmark, and has about 20,000 inhabitants. The island is approx 38 km long and is one of Germany’s major tourist attractions, especially due to the long lovely beaches. It has, however, been a long ongoing process to secure the basis for the tourism and the island as such. Coastal protection has been undertaken since decades, and it will remain as an ongoing process to secure the future of the island and its inhabitants.

To be in due course, Sylt has put out a four-year contract for tender, which was won by Rohde Nielsen A/S. The contract includes delivery of 4,15 mil m³ of sand, which will be dredged approx. 10 Km west of Westerland and then sailed to various locations at the coast, where it either will be pumped ashore for beach nourishment or dumped at near shore locations to protect the fragile dunes against heavy autumn and winter storms.

The versatile vessels Thor R and Sif R are planned to undertake the task of beach nourishment and near shore dumping at Sylt. Both vessels are able to go close ashore to dump. Thor R performed with great success during several previous editions of this project, and it is also expected to do well for this new campaign.

The first phase of this project will start in May and end in October 2009
